This installation is a large sonic space which affected by the environment. A membrane suspended in a gallery is vibrated like a drum by the sound of visitors’ bloodstreams which are detected and modulated in real time. I create the composition’s texture by controlling the vibration of the membrane by changing its tension. The goal is to create an instrumental space which is different from non-space-specific musical instruments such as strings or membranophone.
When a visitor touches the sensor, the sound of the visitor’s bloodstream is detected in real time. This signal is transmitted to transducers attached to the membrane. The membrane tension is controlled by eight motors. If the tension of the membrane is high, the sound is different from the sound created when the tension is low. Through this system, the sound of the bloodstream is changed in an almost organic way.
The concept of this work is “expression of our internal body”. The visitor can experience the body’s internal sound from the outside by entering this specific space of this work.
